Quick History
Tau Kappa Epsilon was founded on January 10, 1899 at Illinois Wesleyan University, our Alpha chapter. It's founding members; Joseph Settles, James McNutt, Clarence Mayer, Owen Truitt, and Charles Atkinson were unhappy with the selective and pretentious character of other fraternities at the time and decided to create an organization in which the only restrictions for membership were based on the personal worth and character of the individual. As the fraternity grew, the Beta and Gamma chapters were founded. Due to the relative positions of the Alpha, Beta, and Gamma chapters, TKE found its emblem, an isosceles triangle, based on the shape made between our first there chapters.
